Over 60 places separate these two teams in the world rankings and that should be evident when Iran take on New Zealand.

Iran have won three friendlies in a row ahead of the tournament, scoring 10 goals in the process.

New Zealand may have only lost 1-0 to England last time out, but they have lost nine of their last 11 matches.

It is fair to say the All Whites were practically given a free pass through qualifying after facing Tahiti, Vanuatu, Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia and they should come unstuck against an Iran team that only conceded 12 goals in 16 qualifiers.

France have only lost one of their last 11 matches and that defeat came in the build-up to this tournament, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to the Ivory Coast last week.

Didier Deschamps’ team have won nine of their last 11 and they are better in all departments than Senegal, who have looked a little sluggish since arriving in the USA.

They lost 3-2 to the USA and drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia in friendlies, but they will expect to score, having netted in 10 of their last 12, while France have gone five games without keeping a clean sheet.

France forward Michael Olise scored 22 goals in 51 matches across the campaign for Bayern Munich, while he netted a hat-trick in the 3-1 friendly win over Northern Ireland. He is in great form and should be able to add another goal to his tally for the season.

Team-mate Kylian Mbappe will lead the line for France and he has been consistent in front of goal all season, registering 2.18 shots on target per match.

Mbappe’s accuracy in front of goal has already been discussed and he will be looking to win another Golden Boot this summer. He is only one goal away from joining Olivier Giroud on 57 goals and Mbappe comes into the tournament in good form.

The Real Madrid ace has scored in four consecutive international appearances, netting on five occasions.

Iran striker Mehdi Taremi is their reliable forward and he scored 10 goals in 14 starts for Olympiacos this season, while he also netted 10 times during qualifying. He has what it takes to trouble this fragile New Zealand defence.

Finally, Erling Haaland should be able to get off the mark against Iraq. The Manchester City star scored 16 times for Norway in eight qualifiers, and he will look to finally star at a World Cup for the first time, so expect him to shoot on sight as he too tries to get his hands on the Golden Boot.
