Switzerland win features wild, never-seen-before World Cup feat
The 2026 FIFA World Cup entered the second round of games in the group stage on Thursday. Czechia and South Africa got things started with a 1-1 draw early. Then it was time for Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina to take center stage at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, CA.
Despite being a heavy favorite to come out of Group B, Switzerland shockingly only tied Qatar in its opener. The pressure was on for the Swiss to turn it on against an inferior Bosnian side. Yet, through 70 minutes, the game remained scoreless.
That is when the game exploded, with Switzerland winning 4-1.
For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, all five goals were scored beyond the 70th minute, per OptaJoe Stats Perform on X, formerly Twitter.
Second half substitution Johan Manzambi broke through in the 74th minute for a 1-0 lead. Fellow sub Ruben Vargas doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Manzambi found the back of the net again in the 90th minute, putting the game out of reach.
To Bosnia’s credit, they didn’t just lie down. Ermin Mahmic scored in the 93rd minute to cut the deficit to 3-1. But in the 97th minute, Granit Xhaka made it 4-1, where it would finish.
With the win, Switzerland leads Group B with four points. Bosnia has one point and will need a lifeline if they want to advance to the knockout stage. Host nation, Canada, is on the verge of earning its first-ever World Cup win on Thursday, which would give them four points as well. They lead Qatar 3-0 midway through the second half, as of this writing.
