Sun’s Brittney Griner unlocks new milestone in win vs. Fire

It has been a challenging season, to say the least, for the Connecticut Sun. They remain in the cellar in the team standings, and it is becoming more worrisome that their last season in the WNBA might end in a whimper.

The Sun, who will be renamed the Houston Comets after relocation, defeated the Portland Fire, 90-87, at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday. It could spark a run for Connecticut, which improved to 6-18. Sometimes, all it takes is one win to go on a surge.

Aaliyah Edwards had 21 points, eight rebounds, and three assists off the bench, while Brittney Griner added 20 points, four rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.

Griner also moved up to 16th place on the league’s all-time rebounding list, surpassing Sancho Lyttle.

It was the latest milestone for the 1o-time All-Star this season. Just a few weeks ago, Griner became the league’s all-time leader in blocks against the Chicago Sky, surpassing Margo Dydek.

The 35-year-old center has been through a lot in her illustrious career, including being jailed in Russia in 2022. But she has kept her head high, continuing her passion for basketball and playing at a high level.

Griner signed with the Sun in the offseason after one year with the Atlanta Dream. She saw her numbers dip significantly in Atlanta due to her minimized role. But now, she is amid a bounce-back campaign in Connecticut. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year is averaging 13.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.8 blocks.

The Sun shot 52% from the field against the Fire. They held on for the victory despite conceding 26 points off 16 turnovers.

Connecticut will visit the Phoenix Mercury on Friday.
