Sunderland vs Nottingham Forest prediction

Sunderland have won three in their last five in a bid for a surprise European place finish, but it’s so bunched towards the top six.

There’s as many as seven teams from 6th to 12th all vying for the two spots – the Europa League group stage and Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Sunderland are still in contention for that but require wins and the teams above them to drop points.

But they face a Forest side still determined to distance themselves from the relegation battle.

The Tricky Trees are now five points clear of the drop after going unbeaten in their last five and further into safety, so could be tough to beat while they’re in survival mode.

Both teams to score?

Sunderland remained unchanged last time out from the same starting XI that faced Tottenham the game before.

They should be set for another unchanged side after their seven-goal thriller against Aston Villa.

They managed to score two late goals within a minute of each other to seemingly seal a draw away from home, but their hopes were dashed when Tammy Abraham came up with a last minute winner.

The game against Newcastle saw them win 2-1 away from home, and back on home turf it wouldn’t be surprising to see them net at least another two against a team still in the relegation battle.

Forest also scored plenty last time out netting four against Burnley, but have conceded in two of their last three Premier League games, both at home.

On the road it might be harder for them to emulate the two games in a row where they didn’t concede, against Fulham and Tottenham.

Gamechangers

Morgan Gibbs-White has now scored four goals in his last two appearances (against Porto and Burnley).

A hattrick last time out also bumped his goal tally for the Premier League this season to 12, matching his goals scored in his previous two seasons combined.

With that kind of form it’s hard to rule him out and not bet on him to follow in with more goals against a side that conceded four last time out.

Sunderland’s top scorer is Brian Brobbey with six, half that of Gibbs-White, but has himself been causing plenty of problems up front with his physicality and always presents a huge danger to defences if they take their eye off the ball for just a second.

The Dutchman wasn’t amongst the goals in their 4-3 thriller with Villa, but isn’t the best bet to score but instead for shots on target.

He has just five goals in 28 appearances and it’s just further proof that the Black Cats are thriving because players from all over the pitch are popping up with important goals.

Important historical facts about Sunderland and Nottingham Forest for betting

This is Sunderland’s first home league game hosting Nottingham Forest since September 2017 when they lost 1-0, and it’s the first in the Premier League since a 1-1 draw back in March 1997.

Sunderland have never won a Premier League game on a Friday – the only day of the week they’ve yet to win on. They could be the 21st team to win in all seven days should they win on Friday night.

Only Crystal Palace’s Premier League games (71) have seen fewer goals this season that Sunderland’s with only 76 goals scored.

Their 4-3 defeat to Villa made up a staggering 9% of the goals scored in games in their 2025/26 league campaign.

Forest are unbeaten in their last five league matches which is their best run and on the best form of the whole season.

Vitor Pereira has won eight of his last 13 league matches across March and April with Wolves and Forest.

But in all other months he has won just four out of 26 games as he just seems to get things right late on in the season.
