Stephen A. Smith gets brutally honest on Braves-Angels brawl
On Tuesday evening, the Atlanta Braves’ win over the Los Angeles Angels was largely overshadowed by a brawl that took place earlier in the game between Jorge Soler and Reynaldo Lopez. The incident occurred after Lopez threw a high pitch that nearly hit Soler, innings after having clipped him on the arm earlier in the game, causing Soler to charge the mound and throw punches, with the Angels and Braves benches clearing shortly thereafter.
Now, ESPN sports media personality Stephen A. Smith has weighed in on the incident.
“I loved it. Obviously you don’t want anyone to get hurt, but those were some haymakers Soler was throwing, and obviously Lopez, I see him with the check left … I really don’t have a problem with it,” said Smith, per First Take on X, formerly Twitter.
In his first at-bat, Soler had crushed a home run against his former team, which may have fueled how quickly things got heated between Lopez and Soler later in the game.
At one point, Braves manager Walt Weiss ended up pulling Soler to the ground in an attempt to break up the altercation, and as expected, both Soler and Lopez were ejected for their role in the brawl. As of yet, no suspensions or fines have been announced by the MLB as a result of the incident.
More importantly for the Braves, the team’s offense finally woke back up on Tuesday, putting seven runs on the board and ending the team’s three-game losing skid on their West Coast trip. Atlanta will wrap up their series against the Angels on Wednesday afternoon in Anaheim, before returning home for a series against the Cleveland Guardians this weekend.
