Steelers legend Bill Cowher makes his prediction on Mike Tomlin’s coaching future

Pittsburgh is the center of the NFL world for the next three days. The 2026 NFL Draft kicks off at 8PM ET from Pittsburgh and it could include plenty of trades in the first round. One Steelers legend just made a bold prediction about former head coach Mike Tomlin ahead of the draft.

Steelers legend Bill Cowher made a bold prediction about Tomlin’s future in the NFL on Thursday. Cowher believes that Tomlin will eventually return to the league as a head coach.

“I don’t think so,” Cowher said when asked if broadcasting will be Tomlin’s next career on The Dan Patrick Show. “I think he loves the sideline, I think he loves the competition. I think he loves that arena, he’s an arena guy.”

Cowher juxtaposed his reasons for leaving the NFL with Tomlin’s to explain why he never went back to the league.

“When I left, I left for my wife’s reasons. It didn’t work out and I got remarried and I didn’t want to take someone into that world again,” Cowher explained. “I didn’t want to do that again.”

Tomlin was not interested in joining another NFL team for the 2026 season. But that does not mean he is riding off into retirement.

Tomlin is joining NBC as a “top studio analyst” for the network’s Sunday Night Football pregame show, Football Night in America, in 2026. That will keep him very close to the football world while he decides what to do next.

If he does decide to come back, Tomlin should have plenty of teams interested in hiring him. Tomlin went 193-114-2 as head coach of the Steelers, with two Super Bowl appearances and one Lombardi Trophy.

Perhaps Tomlin will feel the itch to return to the NFL during the 2027 offseason.
