Steelers’ DK Metcalf suspended 2 games after punching Lions fan in Week 16

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers picked up a big road win against the Detroit Lions that, combined with a loss by the Baltimore Ravens, helped them tighten their grip on the AFC North. One of the big storylines coming out of this game was an altercation that wide receiver DK Metcalf got into with a Lions fan, with Metcalf appearing to either punch or forcefully shove the fan, who was leaning over the railing to engage with him.

Now, the NFL has handed down its punishment for Metcalf.

“The NFL is suspending Steelers WR DK Metcalf two games without pay for physically confronting a Lions fan during Sunday’s win at Detroit, per sources. Metcalf, who had reported the same fan to security last season, plans to appeal,” reported NFL insider Tom Pelissero on X, formerly Twitter.

An NFL official has since released a statement detailing the reasoning for the punishment.

“Metcalf’s actions violate league policy, which specifies that “players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and…if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable,” said the official, per Ian Raport of the NFL Network on X.

If upheld, Metcalf’s suspension will keep him out for the remainder of the regular season. The Steelers need another win or a Ravens loss in order to secure the AFC North and earn a home playoff game.
