Dianna Russini refers to herself as ‘former journalist’ in text she didn’t want The New York Times to publish

In the wake of the Dianna Russini-Mike Vrabel scandal, she resigned from The Athletic after serving as their lead NFL insider, and she might be done with the profession.

The New York Times published an extensive report on the Russini-Vrabel drama. At one point, they note that Russini texted a reporter who had inquired about an interview.

According to the reporter, Russini referred to herself as a “former journalist.” However, she asked the reporter not to quote her from the text exchange.

The reporter then told Russini that “portions” of the texts would be used in the article since “no agreement had been made for them to engage in an off-the-record correspondence.” The former Athletic reporter didn’t respond well, emailing the outlet’s publisher and two senior editors to “reiterate her wish that her comments not be included.”

Russini was with The Athletic for nearly three years before the scandal broke. Initially, the publication stood by her, but she would later resign on Apr. 14 after an investigation began.

In The New York Times’ report, one of Russini’s friends thought she resigned “because she saw an opportunity to reimagine her career and spend more time with her children.”

The scandal began after pictures were published of Russini and Vrabel at a resort in Sedona, Arizona, on Apr. 7. They showed them holding hands and began raising speculation about the nature of their relationship. Russini and Vrabel are married to other people.

An avalanche of photos and videos came after the original photos were published. Pictures dating back to as early as 2020, just months before she married her husband, were posted.

While Russini resigned from her job, Vrabel remains the New England Patriots’ head coach. He led them to a Super Bowl appearance in his first year as the coach.
