Lions insider makes ‘record-setting’ Jahmyr Gibbs contract prediction
The Detroit Lions are ready to make some noise during the 2026 NFL season. Detroit has one of the easiest schedules in the NFL, which should make getting back to the playoffs a lot easier. The future will remain bright in Detroit if the team can lock down one of their best offensive playmakers on a long-term contract.
Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is not stressing about earning a second contract in Detroit. He is reportedly letting his agent negotiate an extension with Detroit’s front office ahead of the 2026 season.
“The Lions picked up the fifth-year option on Gibbs’ contract in April but are also projected to sign him to a record-setting extension this offseason,” ESPN’s Eric Woodyard wrote on Wednesday. “Gibbs is off to a historic start to his career, earning three straight Pro Bowl honors, but he said he isn’t worried about reaching an extension ahead of the season as he’s letting his agent negotiate with Detroit’s front office.”
Gibbs has been nothing short of sensational for the Lions. He has surpassed 1,200 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his three years in the NFL. He could soon be rewarded with a monster contract.
National analysts believe that Gibbs and Falcons running back Bijan Robinson are “playing chicken” with their contract negotiations. They are arguably the two best running backs in the NFL and are both due huge extensions. As a result, whichever player signs their contract first will likely be one-upped by their rival shortly afterwards.
But Gibbs has consistently shrugged off the topic throughout the offseason, instead focusing on team success.
“I’m worried about the team. I’m just trying to hoop right now,” Gibbs said during OTAs, per Woodyard. He added that “I don’t really pay attention to all that stuff” when talking about the Bijan contract comparisons.
Hopefully the Lions can keep Gibbs around for a long time on a long-term deal.
