Cubs lose Edward Cabrera to IL ahead of Matthew Boyd’s injury return

The Chicago Cubs have dealt with injury concerns throughout the 2026 season. On Wednesday, the ball club received some good news and some bad news. Matthew Boyd has been recovering from a knee injury and he is expected to be activated from the injured list to start Thursday’s game against the New York Mets, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. However, Edward Cabrera suffered a left hamstring/adductor strain on Tuesday and is being placed on the injured list, according to Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network.

Losing Cabrera to the IL is far from ideal without question. He has not had the best season, but the last thing the Cubs need is another pitching injury. The starter has recorded a 5.10 ERA across 14 outings with Chicago in 2026.

Boyd, meanwhile, has turned in a 6.00 ERA in his five starts on the mound this year. He has been limited due to injury, and Chicago is certainly hopeful he can stay on the field for the remainder of the ’26 campaign.

The Cubs were able to earn a 9-6 win on Tuesday against the Mets despite Cabrera’s injury. Chicago leads the four-game series 1-0. On Wednesday, the teams will play a doubleheader before the final contest of the series on Thursday.

The first game of the doubleheader on Wednesday is scheduled for 1:10 PM EST. First pitch for the second ball game is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST. Chicago can clinch a series victory with two wins in the doubleheader, but that will be a challenge on the road.
