Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers taking mentorship role to ‘new level’ per Mike McCarthy

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be relying on Aaron Rodgers for the second straight season to help lead the offense. Unfortunately for them, this will be the last year he’ll be at the helm, as he has plans to retire following the season, which means it will be somebody else’s offense to run.

Those options could end up being Will Howard or Drew Allar, and Rodgers is already taking them under his wing. Mike McCarthy sees it, but it’s nothing new from how the veteran quarterback has operated.

“He’s always done that, which I’ve always had a lot of respect for,” McCarthy said via Chris Adamski of TribLIVE. “I think it’s an important component of your quarterback room and the dynamics of the quarterback room. Keeping the accountability throughout that process, but now it’s at a different level now. He shares constantly, and he’s very reflective as you make tweaks.”

Rodgers is a true veteran, as he’s experienced almost everything that a player can. He’s been through the ups and downs, had a major injury, and come back to still compete at high level. People have doubted him over the years, thinking that his career is over, and he proves them wrong whenever he gets the chance.

Howard and Allar probably have the best mentor a quarterback can have, and hopefully that reflects in their career as the years go on. As of now, they’re in wait-and-see mode as Rodgers still has enough left in the tank to do what he needs to win football games.

With the additions throughout the offseason, the Steelers should once again be in the mix for one of the better teams in the AFC. It may be a little harder this time around, as their division is back healthy and ready to compete.
