Star Dodgers pitching prospect receives disappointing injury update
The Los Angeles Dodgers received another setback Saturday involving River Ryan, one of the organization’s most promising young arms, as another injury slowed his push toward a major league opportunity.
Ryan, the Dodgers’ No. 6 prospect and the club’s top healthy pitching prospect, is returning to the injured list. The 27-year-old right-hander had built a strong case for future consideration while Los Angeles continued navigating rotation uncertainty.
The timing makes the development frustrating. Ryan had worked his way back from Tommy John surgery and was producing encouraging results for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Through eight starts, he went 3-1 with a 4.46 ERA while striking out 43 batters and walking only eight across 36.1 innings.
The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya shared the update on X, formerly Twitter, while crediting fellow reporter Katie Woo for the joint report on Ryan’s latest setback.
“Sources to me and @katiejwoo: Dodgers pitching prospect River Ryan is going on the minor league IL with a hamstring issue. Missed time earlier in OKC’s season with hamstring trouble and had his start skipped this week.”

The recurring hamstring issue adds concern because Ryan, a former 2021 11th-round pick by the San Diego Padres, already missed time earlier this season with similar trouble. The Dodgers also skipped his scheduled start this week before placing him on the seven-day minor league injured list.
Ryan’s absence affects more than Oklahoma City’s rotation. Manager Dave Roberts recently acknowledged questions around Los Angeles’ pitching staff, making Ryan a logical candidate if the Dodgers needed another internal option later this summer.
Instead, the organization must wait while Ryan recovers again. The Dodgers have reason to believe in his long-term outlook, but protecting his health now takes priority over any immediate call-up conversation.
For Los Angeles, the setback delays another potential boost during a demanding stretch this season as rotation depth remains one of the club’s clearest ongoing concerns.
