Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama pumps the brakes on hype after first playoff win

Victor Wembanyama was barely hearing anything during the postgame interview. The crowd was serenading him and the San Antonio Spurs with cheers after they defeated the Portland Trail Blazers, 111-98, in Game 1 of their first-round series at Frost Bank Center on Sunday.

Wembanyama was nothing but impressive, earning his first-ever win in the playoffs. He scored 35 points, including 5-of-6 three-pointers, on top of five rebounds and two blocks.

In one play in the first quarter, Wembanyama made an end-to-end highlight, including showing off his handles, earning a smile and applause from Tim Duncan, who was sitting at courtside with David Robinson.

Wembanyama had a hard time hearing the question during the postgame interview, but there is no question that his focus is unperturbed.

“It was a great first (playoff win). We were solid. But as expected, job’s not done,” said Wembanyama.

At 22 years old, the two-time All-Star has already displayed a sense of maturity that is usually seen in seasoned veterans. His mindset has helped him better embrace his role as the cornerstone of the Spurs.

Some have expressed concern about the Spurs’ lack of experience in the playoffs, but Wembanyama was adamant that they can still get the job done. If his performance in Game 1 was a sign of things to come, it might be a short series for the Trail Blazers.

The Spurs won their first game in the playoffs since 2017.

Wembanyama, who surpassed Duncan for most points in a postseason debut in team history, got plenty of support from Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox, who had 17 points apiece, while also combining for 12 rebounds and 15 assists.
