Spurs’ Keldon Johnson comes dangerously close to pantsing Naz Reid in Game 5

The late great Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, once said: If you are having trouble defending someone, pull down his shorts, chat.

Or at least that is what San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson was thinking on Tuesday.

The Spurs battled the Minnesota Timberwolves at Frost Bank Center in Game 5, looking to take a pivotal 3-2 advantage in their second-round series in the playoffs.

In the first half, Johnson tried to stop Naz Reid from driving to the lane by almost pantsing him. Johnson was clearly trying to pull down Reid’s shorts, but no foul was called.

“What’s going on right here? How can the official not see that?” asked Jamal Crawford, who was calling the game for NBC and Peacock, during the replay.

Exactly how coach Mitch Johnson drew it up.

Johnson and Reid have a lot in common as the top weapons off the bench for their respective squads. They provide extra scoring, two-way toughness, and ample experience. Johnson was named Sixth Man of the Year, while Reid won the award in 2024.

In the best-of-seven affair, Johnson is averaging 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in 19.8 minutes, while Reid is putting up 14.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 28.5 minutes.

Reid was elbowed in the neck by Victor Wembanyama in Game 4, leading to the latter’s ejection. Wembanyama escaped suspension for Game 5.

As of writing, the Spurs are leading the Timberwolves by a slim margin in the third quarter. Johnson has eight points and two rebounds, while Naz Reid has eight points and four rebounds. Both of them came off the bench.
