Sparks’ Lynne Roberts shares true feelings on Nneka Ogwumike’s game-winner vs. Liberty
Nneka Ogwumike added another big shot to her ever-growing highlight reel after sinking the game-winning three-pointer to save the Los Angeles Sparks against the New York Liberty, 98-97, at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday.
Ogwumike was as cool as a milkshake when she drained the gutsy shot as time expired. Erica Wheeler issued the perfect pass under duress, and Ogwumike made sure that she did not waste it.
It was a fitting end to the nail-biting contest, which celebrated the 29th anniversary of the WNBA’s inaugural game, including inviting Lisa Leslie and Kym Hampton to recreate the league’s first-ever tipoff.
But it was Ogwumike who shone the brightest, earning her high praise from Sparks coach Lynne Roberts.
“I think everyone in our locker room wouldn’t have picked another person to hit that shot. What she’s done for this league, she’s one of one,” said Roberts in the video shared by sports reporter Justin Russo.
“That’s what sports can do, bring out those moments. But just you couldn’t have scripted it any better.”

The 35-year-old Ogwumike finished with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. She shot 11-of-18 from the field, including 2-of-4 from long distance. Her two three-pointers came in the final 1:30 of the game.
The Sparks improved to 8-8, while the Liberty dropped to 11-6.
Roberts described Ogwumike’s game-winning shot as “remarkable.” She also tipped her hat to the one-time MVP for leading the players’ fight for a new labor deal with the WNBA.
Ogwumike returned to Los Angeles in the offseason after two years with the Seattle Storm. The Sparks drafted her as the No. 1 pick in 2012.
