Sheffield Wednesday dodge unwanted EFL records in front of biggest Championship crowd on momentous final day

Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed an unusually positive end to one of English football’s most catastrophic seasons in history.

US businessman David Storch’s £20million takeover of the club was officially confirmed on the final day of the Championship season.

Not only did it take them out of administration, it was also announced that the EFL would not be imposing a further 15-point deduction in League One for the 2026/27 season.

With good vibes suddenly coursing through Hillsborough, things got even better as Sheffield Wednesday won their first home game of the season, beating West Brom 2-1.

It was watched by 33,750 people – marking the highest attendance at a Championship match this season.

Having already suffered the earliest ever relegation in EFL history, the Owls avoided setting more unwanted records on Saturday.

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah scrambled home the Owls’ opener in the 36th minute to send the already-jubilant supporters wild.

Captain Liam Palmer added a second four minutes later to put the Wednesday fans in dreamland – and they held on after a late goal from Karlan Grant.

The victory sees them end the season on zero points, ensuring they do not become the first ever team to be relegated on minus points.

Over the campaign, the Owls had 18 points deducted for a combination of unpaid bills and then going into administration last November.

Meanwhile, no team in the top four tiers of English football had ever gone an entire season without a win at their stadium.

Their best result at Hillsborough this season had previously been a 1-1 draw with Leeds United which saw them knock the Premier League side out of the EFL Cup on penalties.
