Senators’ Steve Staios drops ‘comfortable’ truth bomb on Brady Tkachuk trade
While there have already been a handful of trades so far in the NHL offseason, the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers have pulled off the biggest move so far.
The Senators traded captain Brady Tkachuk, whom they selected in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft, to the Panthers in return for multiple draft picks, but no NHL-ready players. The move means that Brady will now play with his brother Matthew Tkachuk, who helped the Panthers reach the Stanley Cup Final three straight years (winning twice) after his own blockbuster acquisition by Florida from Calgary in 2022.
According to Senators general manager Steve Staios, Tkachuk had more than one team on his trade list, but ultimately, all directions appeared to point toward joining his brother Matthew with the Panthers.
“It was clearly pointed at one team at the end,” Staios said via Bruce Garrioch on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I feel comfortable with the return given the circumstances.”
Meanwhile, Staios also delivered a promise to frustrated Senators fans, saying that he did what he felt was best for the long-term health of the team and that they’re still looking to improve their roster.
“This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt was best for the long-term future of our hockey club,” the Senators GM said in a statement, via The Athletic’s Chris Johnston. “We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.”
So far in his NHL career, Tkachuk has 213 goals with 250 assists in 572 games, all of which have been played with the Senators.
