Senators rumors: Pierre LeBrun reveals Claude Giroux’s plans for next season amid retirement speculation
The Ottawa Senators made a run to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2025-26. As the season has come to an end, there are rumors about the Senators reshaping their roster.
Now, one of the major parts of their roster is making declarations about his future, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.
“Claude Giroux needed some time after the season to mull over his future, as far as whether he wanted to continue playing. I was told Monday that the 38-year-old forward, an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has decided he wants to come back and play another season,” LeBrun wrote.
Giroux just finished the one-year contract extension he signed with the Senators last summer. It came on the heels of a three-year deal he signed with the Senators ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. The contract extension took him from an AAV of $6.5 million to $2 million.
Giroux, a once-dominant forward in the NHL, is coming off his worst season in terms of points since 2020-21. This season, he scored 14 goals while adding 35 assists, good for just 49 points. He last scored below 50 points in 2021-22, when he played just 54 games due to COVID-19 restrictions. That year, he found the back of the net 16 times with 27 assists. Outside of that, his worst season was 2012-13, when he played just 48 games due to injury. Still, he lit the lamp 13 times while adding 35 helpers.
While it is clear that Giroux has lost a step, he is still a capable forward and is willing to come back for another season in the NHL. Now, the question becomes, will it be with the Senators or not?
