Senators rumors: Ottawa has trade interest in potential Ducks outcast
The Ottawa Senators made the Stanley Cup Playoffs again in 2026, but their run ended rather quickly. Ottawa was swept by the eventual Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes in the first round. It’s clear they need to do more, and they may turn to the Anaheim Ducks in an effort to bolster their roster.
The Senators reportedly have interest in a trade for Mason McTavish, according to Postmedia reporter Bruce Garrioch. McTavish, 23, has seemingly fallen out of favor in Anaheim following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. This could lead to his departure from Orange County this summer.
“He is coming off a difficult season with only 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 75 games. McTavish was scratched for two games in the playoffs by Anaheim coach Joel Quenneville, and that has left his future with the organization in doubt. Teams have been calling to see if he’s available,” Garrioch wrote for the Ottawa Sun on Saturday.
The Senators could certainly stand to add additional forward depth. Ottawa did rank eighth in goals per game this season, per ESPN. However, only two players managed more than 60 points this season. A third player — Dylan Cozens — fell one point shy of that mark.
Ottawa’s scoring dried up in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They scored five goals in four games, and never managed more than two goals in any one game. Furthermore, they were shutout in the first game of the series against the Hurricanes.
McTavish is a player who has shown the ability to generate offense. Before the 2025-26 season, the former third-overall pick scored 22 goals and 50 points in 2024-25. He looked like one of the best up-and-coming playmakers in the game, as well.
Whether the Seantors can unlock that potential certainly remains to be seen. But it definitely doesn’t hurt for general manager Steve Staios to see if he can pry the young pivot out of Orange County this summer.
