Senators GM makes promise to fans after Brady Tkachuk trade

The Ottawa Senators stunned the hockey world on Sunday by trading captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. Brady joins his brother Matthew Tkachuk in Florida after spending eight seasons in the Canadian capital. In exchange for their captain, the Senators received three first-round picks and a second-round pick in 2030.

This is certainly a tough day for Senators fans. They have lost their captain and a player the fanbase truly rallied behind. After the dust settled on the trade, general manager Steve Staios publicly committed to improving the team’s current roster.

“This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt was best for the long-term future of our hockey club,” the Senators GM said in a statement, via The Athletic’s Chris Johnston. “We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.”

The Senators began the week with just one first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Now, Ottawa will walk into the KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Friday with three of them. They own the ninth, 25th, and 32nd picks in the upcoming draft.

Ottawa also received a first-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft, as well as a second-round selection in 2030. The 2029 first-rounder is top-10 protected.

Tkachuk ends his time in Ottawa, having made the postseason twice, though both runs ended in round one. He is fifth all-time among Senators skaters in points, and is one of four players in franchise history to score more than 200 goals in a Senators sweater.
