Seahawks’ Super Bowl TD scorer gives big update after offseason surgeries

The Seattle Seahawks finally avenged their heartbreaking loss to the New England Patriots years ago in this year’s Super Bowl. In Super Bowl LX, Seattle overcame their demons and beat New England to win their first championship since 2014. One of the heroes of that run was tight end AJ Barner, who caught the first touchdown of the game from Sam Darnold.

Ahead of the Seahawks’ title defense season, Barner gave the media an update on his health. The tight end revealed that he underwent two surgeries after the season ended, but that he’ll be ready to go once training camp starts.

“Definitely feeling better,” Barner said, per insider Brady Henderson. “Definitely still a process to get back out there, but by [training camp], I’m going to be ready to go.”

“I’m going to feel much better, and I’m already feeling much better, and I think that’s where I’ll see strides,” he added. “I’m feeling good, and I’m chomping at the bit trying to get back out there.”

Barner, a second-year player out of Michigan, was largely overshadowed by the breakout of Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Rashid Shaheed’s arrival midseason. However, he’s been quietly one of the Seahawks’ most important players on offense. Despite dealing with nagging injuries throughout the year, Barner was a productive starter. He recorded 52 catches for 519 yards, catching six touchdowns in the regular season.

Barner also made an impact for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Seattle was steadily pulling away from New England throughout the game with field goals, but they needed a spark to put away the upstart team for good. It was Barner who broke the game open, getting open on a corner route in the end zone for the game’s first touchdown. From there, the Seahawks closed the game out despite the Patriots scoring a touchdown in the next drive.

The Seahawks will undoubtedly have a hard time defending their Super Bowl trophy this year. Their division rivals Los Angeles Rams, who they beat in the NFC Championship Game, just added Myles Garrett to an already stacked roster. We’ll see how Seattle overcomes the odds this year.
