Scottie Scheffler inexplicably into the drink not once, but twice at the Masters

The 90th Masters Tournament is well underway, and Rory McIlroy looks poised to go back-to-back. Several other PGA Tour stars are in the mix, but on Friday, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has gone in the other direction.

He entered Friday’s second round 2-under par, three shots behind McIlroy and Sam Burns. After a slew of pars to begin his day, Scheffler No. 4 and No. 5, dropping him back to even par.

The four-time major champion bounced back with a couple of birdies around the turn. But then the inexplicable happened.

While playing from the fairway of the par-5 13th, Scheffler missed right and found the water. After failing to get up and down, he bogeyed the hole. It got worse from there.

The Ridgewood, NJ native once again hit the fairway on a par-5, the 15th this time. Once again, he found water. This time, Scheffler flew the green and sailed 20 yards past the hole, down a slope, and into the drink.

He would bogey the hole and fall to 1-under for the tournament. The two-time Masters winner has thus far dropped nearly a full shot to the field on approach. That is truly wild, considering how effective he is with his irons.

Meanwhile, McIlroy came out white hot on Friday. He birdied three of his first four holes to climb to 8-under, building a three-shot lead. He has since dropped a shot at the par-4 5th, sitting at 7-under.

The man McIlroy defeated in a playoff last year, Justin Rose, made a charge during the second round. He is in the clubhouse at 5-under par, and in prime position to avenge his painful loss.
