Ryan Smith reveals how Carlos Boozer found out Cameron wasn’t going to Jazz
Carlos Boozer developed into an All-Star with the Utah Jazz, and arguably became one of the best players in franchise history during his NBA career. So it might have seem fitting if his son, Cameron Boozer, a projected top-three pick in the NBA Draft, would have ended up in the same place. But the Jazz, owners of the No. 2 pick, opted to go with Darryn Peterson instead, leaving Cameron to go No. 3 to the Memphis Grizzlies.
While it would have been a nice feel-good story for Cameron Boozer to end up in the same place his father Carlos built his NBA career, Jazz owner Ryan Smith acknowledged that there was never any hard feelings or conversations between the franchise and the elder Boozer regarding not drafting his son.
“I love everything about the Boozer family … It’s been an interesting process because he’s [Carlos] got this confidence about his boy, but his boy stands alone. Anyone who’s met Cam Boozer, he’s a contagious personality and I loved our conversations with him,” Smith said during an appearance on FanDuel’s NBA show, ‘Run It Back.’
“He’s going to be fine wherever he ends up and I think they all know that. He was the youngest player in the draft but he’ll be a veteran on whatever team he shows up on, on day 1.”
Considering the Jazz’s frontcourt of Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. with Walker Kessler also expected to be in that mix, it’s not hard to understand why the team might have passed on the son of one of their favorite players in franchise history. They had more of a need at guard and couldn’t pass up on Peterson.
