Rule 5 pitcher delivering unexpected boost for Blue Jays

Spencer Miles is turning out to be the gift that keeps on giving for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Selected by the Blue Jays via the Rule 5 draft, Miles continues to impress for Toronto, which got another sterling performance from him during Thursday’s series finale against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York.

Toronto was on bullpen day in that contest, with Miles expected to take up most of the innings for the Blue Jays’ pitching. He responded to the challenge by holding the Yankees scoreless in 4 1/3 innings of work, while allowing just six hits and posting a career-high in strikeouts.

“New career-highs of 4.1 innings and 63 pitches for Spencer Miles, allowing only two hits and a walk with six strikeouts, gets the Blue Jays through seven with a 2-0 lead. The Rule 5 pick is providing so much more than could have been expected, at a time it’s so needed,” wrote Shi Davidi of Sportsnet in a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

The Blue Jays made sure not to waste Miles’ great outing, as they came away with a 2-0 win, with Tyler Rogers and Jeff Hoffman combining for 2.0 scoreless innings to get the job done after Miles exited the hill.

After taming Aaron Judge and the Yankees, the 25-year-old Miles lowered his ERA in the 2026 MLB season to 2.17 through 14 appearances (including a start) , while also brandishing a 1.03 WHIP across 29.0 innings.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 23-27, will next host the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three-game series that begins Friday at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
