Buccaneers rumors: Adam Schefter unveils major obstacle in Baker Mayfield contract talks

There’s just a few weeks left before the start of the 2026 NFL season, and yet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers find themselves in a pickle. Quarterback Baker Mayfield’s contract is expiring soon, so both sides are trying to work out a new deal. However, they find themselves at an impasse surrounding the terms of the contract.

Adam Schefter reported the apparent source of friction between the Buccaneers and Mayfield. According to the long-time insider, Mayfield has taken issue with the length of the contracts offered to him, not the money offered. Schefter speculates that Mayfield feels that he deserves a longer contract if he was the Bucs’ quarterback of the future.

Mayfield turned heads after commenting on his failed extension talks with the Buccaneers a few weeks ago. The star quarterback issued a fiery statement calling out the front office for “not taking care” of him in contract talks.

“If you’ve waited this long to take care of your franchise quarterback, that’s too bad because it’s only going to get worse from here. I’m going to have a really big year.” Mayfield told ESPN. “As a highly competitive guy, sometimes you have to put yourself back into a corner and fight your way out. But I have a lot of guys and a lot of staff around me that are with me.”

The comments has not fazed Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, who had this to say on the matter.

“I didn’t have much of a reaction to what Baker said yesterday,” Bowles said. “He had to say what he had to say, and today it was all about ball… I don’t have much to say on it. I’ve heard much worse. We’re good.”

Unless a major development happens in the next weeks, Mayfield will likely play out the final year of his contract. What happens after is anyone’s guess.
