Christian Gonzalez, Patriots ‘not close’ to new contract entering preseason Week 2

Christian Gonzalez left many wondering if he was healthy enough to compete in the Philadelphia Eagles joint practice. But there’s another major question involving the New England Patriots star: If he’s soon to accept a new extension and reset the cornerback market.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter dropped an update via The Pat McAfee Show Wednesday.

“I’m not so sure that the Christian Gonzalez deal is gonna get done so quickly,” Schefter said. “Obviously there’s a lot or parameters in place. And there’s the road map that Devon Witherspoon presented.”

The Seattle Seahawks star cornerback and Super Bowl winner indeed realtered the market in signing his four-year, $132 million extension Monday. Schefter, though, indicated there’s no timetable involving Gonzalez despite NFL Preseason starting.

“Up until this weekend the two sides weren’t overly close and they had not had a lot of productive conversations,” Schefter added.

“Gonzo” emerged as the newest lockdown cornerback for a franchise that produced Stephon Gilmore and Ty Law. Only this time Gonzalez became a defensive cornerstone for head coach Mike Vrabel.

The former Oregon Ducks star is fresh off delivering his first-ever Pro Bowl appearance after breaking up 10 passes. He also delivered a career-best 69 tackles with 54 solo stops for the AFC champs.

Early projection from fellow ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler is Gonzalez could shoot for $35 million annually. That deal catapults Gonzalez over the Super Bowl 60 champion, who receives $33 million annually thanks to his extension.

The Patriots face the Eagles Saturday with Gonzalez likely sitting out amid his injury. Plus contract extension chatter with the team.
