The Cowboys reasons Trevon Diggs chose Seahawks in free agency

The Seattle Seahawks have been trying to solidify their second cornerback spot during training camp after locking up their No. 1 corner, Devon Witherspoon, on a record-setting $132 million contract extension.

For a while, it looked like Josh Jobe would be in that second corner spot opposite Witherspoon, but a rough training camp has led Mike Macdonald and the Seattle front office to seek help elsewhere. They started on that quest with Terrion Arnold, but with Arnold slated to hit the commissioner’s exempt list due to his legal situation, the Seahawks also signed former Dallas Cowboys star Trevon Diggs.

Diggs was one of the hottest remaining free agents in the league, so the move made headlines. On Wednesday, he revealed why he chose to come to Seattle, and some of his former Cowboys teammates in the Pacific Northwest is a big reason per ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

“Seeing the young guys coming together and being a great football team, I know a lot of familiar faces here. Josh Jobe, D-Law [DeMarcus Lawrence],” Diggs said. “Talking to those guys and they’re saying it’s a great fit. Everything that they have going here, I would love to be a part of it.”

Diggs played with Jobe in college at Alabama, and he played five seasons with Lawrence in Dallas from 2020-24. He also played with new Seattle additions Dante Fowler Jr. and Noah Igbinoghene in Dallas. The Seahawks and Diggs will both be hoping that he can regain some of his form from those Cowboys days.

In five-plus seasons with the Cowboys, the former First Team All-Pro picked off 20 passes and had 63 pass breakups. During his breakout 2021 campaign, he picked off a remarkable 11 passes and took two of them back for touchdowns to lead the league.

Of course, it’s no guarantee that Diggs comes in and is the starter on the outside right away. Jobe has experience in Macdonald’s system and played well at the end of last season, so he is still the favorite to start. Either way, Diggs will likely have an immediate role on one of the best defenses in football in 2026.
