1 last-minute trade Chiefs must make before Week 1 of 2026 NFL season
The Kansas City Chiefs have spent the 2026 offseason trying to erase the memory of an uncharacteristic postseason absence. Their summer has reflected that urgency. Patrick Mahomes has returned to full 11-on-11 work while wearing a protective knee sleeve. Eric Bieniemy has brought a more physically demanding identity back to the offense. The addition of Kenneth Walker III has given the backfield a dynamic new centerpiece. L’Jarius Sneed, Mansoor Delane, Nohl Williams, and Kader Kohou are competing for prominent roles in the secondary. The biggest surprise of camp, meanwhile, has come along the offensive line. Kahlil Benson has forced his way into the starting tackle conversation through consistently strong padded practices. Kansas City therefore enters the final stretch of preseason with plenty of reasons for optimism.
Cornerback surplus

The most logical catalyst for a final Kansas City trade is the team’s sudden surplus at cornerback. Kristian Fulton arrived last year with legitimate starting experience. Under normal circumstances, having a veteran of his caliber available would be considered an enviable luxury. The problem is Chiefs now appear to have more capable cornerbacks than meaningful snaps.
Delane has emerged as a particularly intriguing option. He has displayed the physical coverage skills required to survive in this aggressive defensive system. Nohl Williams has also made an impression with his ball-hawking instincts. Kader Kohou adds another versatile option. Suddenly, Fulton is fighting for opportunities.
Kansas City could simply retain him and enjoy the depth. But that would represent a missed opportunity. Right now, teams are becoming increasingly desperate to address obvious roster weaknesses. Injuries have accumulated throughout training camps, and contenders are beginning to identify the positions that could derail their seasons. Outside cornerback is always one of those positions.
A proven player such as Fulton therefore carries considerably more trade value to a cornerback-needy team than he does sitting behind a crowded group in Kansas City. The Chiefs should take advantage.
Interior defensive line
Kansas City’s ideal return should be an established interior defensive lineman. Chris Jones remains the centerpiece of the defensive front. Opposing offenses will continue to dedicate significant resources toward limiting his impact. That makes the players operating alongside him critically important. The Chiefs need someone who can capitalize on that attention.
Kansas City does not necessarily need another superstar. It needs someone dependable enough to give Steve Spagnuolo a legitimate rotation piece when Jones needs a breather. That need becomes even more pressing with Omarr Norman-Lott working his way back from injury.
That is where the domino effect matters. A stronger defensive tackle rotation would allow Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill to play faster because they would not constantly be dealing with offensive linemen climbing into the second level. It would also create cleaner opportunities for George Karlaftis and Ashton Gillotte on the edge.
Strike now
The timing makes this potential move particularly compelling.
A hypothetical trade could involve the New York Jets.
Kansas City Chiefs receive:
Harrison Phillips (DT/NT)
New York Jets receive:
Kristian Fulton (CB)
2027 6th-Round Pick
For the Chiefs, Phillips fits the exact profile Spagnuolo needs. He is a heavy-handed, 307-pound run plugger who commands interior double teams. That can free up Nick Bolton and Chris Jones while Omarr Norman-Lott works back to full strength.
For the Jets, they already have interior depth but need reliable, experienced perimeter coverage opposite Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fulton gives them an immediate starting-caliber cornerback without surrendering offensive or high-round draft capital.
Once Week 1 arrives, the value of roster flexibility changes dramatically. Teams become more reluctant to move established players. Injuries can suddenly turn a manageable weakness into an emergency. Kansas City therefore has a narrow window in which it can use its existing surplus to address a position that could become problematic over the course of the season.
The Chiefs do not need to make a trade simply for the sake of making one. They need to make the right trade. Fulton represents a valuable asset because another team could view him as an immediate starter. Kansas City, meanwhile, can afford to part with him because the secondary has developed enough depth to absorb the loss.
Right trade, right message
A deal involving Fulton for a proven interior defensive lineman would accomplish exactly that without requiring Kansas City to sacrifice one of its core stars. It would also send a message.
The Chiefs know where their roster is vulnerable. They are willing to act before those vulnerabilities become problems. For a team trying to reclaim the AFC throne, that kind of foresight matters.
Kansas City just needs one smart final move. And turning surplus cornerback depth into interior defensive line muscle may be the move that quietly makes this roster much harder to beat.
