Rudy Gobert says quiet part out loud amid struggles vs. Spurs
Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert is keeping it real about his team’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs. After stealing Game 1, the Timberwolves were never able to fully take control of the series, though they escaped with a victory over the Spurs in Game 4 following Victor Wembanyama’s ejection for elbowing Naz Reed.
Gobert, in comments obtained by The New York Times and The Athletic, admitted that the Spurs were a better team than they were.
“I think they were the better team. We feel like we had a chance to beat these guys. But when it came down to the court, they clearly outplayed us in three games. Now it’s about looking at why and understanding why.”
Gobert often found himself tasked with defending his fellow countryman, Victor Wembanyama. And while Wembanyama had a modest offensive showing in Game 1, only scoring 11 points, he stepped it up in the subsequent deciding games.
In Game 3, Wembanyama exploded for 39 points and followed up his first playoff ejection with 27 points. Meanwhile, Rudy Gobert had his highs and lows in the series. He found himself in double figures in Games 3 and 4 on the offensive side, but tallied 4 points in Game 5 and 0 points in Game 6.
Gobert’s comments were more illustrative of his feelings than Anthony Edwards, who dodged a question about how the team can improve their chances in the West.
“I don’t know man. I don’t think that’s a question for me.”
With the Timberwolves now out of the playoffs, a lot of conversations will surely be had about what’s next for the franchise, especially as Anthony Edwards enters his prime.
