Royals’ Seth Lugo receives injury update after getting hit by 107 MPH line drive vs. Rangers

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo was involved in a frightening moment during the team’s 6-4 loss to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Rangers outfielder Brandon Nimmo — Lugo’s former teammate — hit a 107 MPH line drive off of the pitcher’s head. The ball bounced into the outfield and Nimmo immediately ran and checked on Lugo after reaching first base. On Thursday, the Royals announced that Lugo’s CT scan was clear.

Kansas City will continue to closely monitor updates on the pitcher’s injury status. It was a frightening moment to say the least.

Lugo, 36, has pitched to a 3.86 ERA across a league leading 14 starts so far during the 2026 season. He also has 66 strikeouts in his 79.1 innings of work. He is a reliable veteran in the Royals’ rotation. For now, he is focused on recovering from his injury scare.

Lugo pitched for the New York Mets from 2016-2022. Nimmo also made his MLB debut in 2016 with the Mets and would play in New York until 2025. The two were teammates for a number of years with the ball club.

The Royals have dealt with injury concerns throughout the season. They entered the new campaign with lofty expectations, but Kansas City is just 28-40 overall as of this story’s writing. They are 8.5 games back of first place in the American League Central standings.

The Royals could potentially turn things around at some point, but they need to do so as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will likely end up selling ahead of the upcoming MLB trade deadline.
