Roman Anthony placed on Red Sox IL with wrist injury after Tigers sweep

The Boston Red Sox haven’t had the start to the season that they wanted, and one big reason is the struggles of Roman Anthony, who has now hit another snag with his lingering wrist injury. After trying to play through the issue, the Red Sox are now going to shut down their young star in hopes of a recovery, according to Tim Healey via X, formerly Twitter.

“Roman Anthony is going on the IL, Chad Tracy said. His wrist isn’t getting better, but the Red Sox hope he won’t miss much more than the minimum 10 days,” Healey reported.

The Red Sox will be calling up Mickey Gaspar in a corresponding move, but it likely won’t be an injury that keeps Anthony out longer than the 10 days.

“Roman Anthony said he plans to be back in the Red Sox’ lineup the day he is eligible (which is May 15, a week from tomorrow). He is wearing a brace on his hand and isn’t doing any baseball activities,” Healey continued.

It has been a rough start to the season for Anthony outside of the injury, as he is batting just .229 with one home run. While the wrist issue is something new, Anthony was also battling a back injury earlier this season. While struggling with injuries isn’t always a good sign this early in his career, it does help ease fans’ concerns, as he hasn’t been playing at 100%.

Boston’s play has improved since its rough start, but they still sit last in the American League East with a 16-21 record after sweeping the Detroit Tigers in their most recent series.
