Robbie Keane steps down as manager of Ferencvaros amid links to former club

Robbie Keane has quit as head coach of Ferencvaros, talkSPORT understands.

Keane took over as head coach of the Hungarian side in January 2025 having replaced Pascal Jansen at the Ferencvaros Stadion helm.

The Greens won the title that same season, but could only finish second this time around as they finished one point behind champions Gyori ETO.

Keane did guide Ferencvaros to the Magyar Kupa, having overseen a 1-0 win over Zalaegerszeg earlier this month.

However, the 45-year-old has now stepped down following the culmination of the 2025-26 season.

The Irishman is one of the frontrunners to take over as Celtic boss having previously been linked with the job.

Keane briefly played for Celtic in 2010 having scored 12 goals in 16 league appearances during a loan spell with the Scottish giants.

Celtic aren’t the only side courting Keane, with Slovak side Slovan Bratislava also thought to be keen on the former striker.

O’Neill hoping to continue at Celtic helm

Martin O’Neill, however, is hoping to continue as Celtic head coach after guiding the Scottish giants to the title.

The Bhoys secured a dramatic 3-1 win over Hearts last weekend to leapfrog the Jam Tarts into top spot as goals from Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand cancelled out Lawrence Shankland’s opener.

And Celtic have the chance to secure a league and cup double, when they face Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup final this weekend.

In the run up to Saturday’s clash, O’Neill is keen to hold talks with Parkhead supremo Dermot Desmond about continuing in charge.

“Yeah, I would expect Dermot to talk to me,” O’Neill said.

“I wouldn’t expect him to say, ‘Look, there’s a five-year deal’. If he does, that takes me up to 93!

“It’s whether I’d be up for the challenge again, really. Our club have to really look at it and see that the challenges are coming, which is great.

“It’s great that Hearts are coming with a charge and Rangers will get stronger. It’s a call for us to have a look at the situation. But, again, that takes a bit of time.

“I have not had any word and I don’t expect to have that, this week anyway. But whatever you do, you don’t get much time when the season starts.

“The squad is back on June 26 and we will have a plethora of players coming back. I’m not talking about the World Cup boys, I’m talking about players I’ve never seen.

“That takes a bit of doing and it’s whether you’d have the real energy to do that. Could I do it? I genuinely don’t know, honestly.”
