Reds manager Terry Francona keeps it 100% real on lineup changes vs. Nationals
The Cincinnati Reds continue searching for offensive consistency, and manager Terry Francona is not avoiding the challenge as the club attempts to reverse a difficult stretch in May.
The Reds entered Wednesday night’s matchup vs. the Washington Nationals at Great American Ball Park after losing eight of their previous 10 games. During that stretch, the Reds’ offense has hit just .232 as a team while struggling to generate reliable production throughout the lineup.
The club also averaged fewer than four runs per game across that span, increasing pressure on Francona to find a lineup combination capable of creating more consistent offense.
In response, the Reds skipper made several notable lineup adjustments ahead of the second game of the series. Will Benson moved into the leadoff spot while Elly De La Cruz shifted into the No. 2 role for the first time since 2024, with rookie Sal Stewart jumping into the third position in the batting order.
Reds Live’s Brian Giesenschlag shared Francona’s comments Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, alongside a post from the Reds featuring the team’s updated lineup on a graphic ahead of first pitch vs. the Nationals.
“It’s a little challenging right now. I value consistency and patience. I also value winning.”

Francona’s remarks immediately resonated with fans because they reflected the difficult balance managers often face during prolonged offensive struggles. Throughout his managerial career, Francona has consistently favored lineup stability, but Cincinnati’s recent results have clearly forced him to reconsider that approach.
The Reds entered the night at 20-22 and fourth in the National League Central standings. Despite the recent struggles, Cincinnati still believes its young core can provide the boost needed to climb back into contention as the season progresses.
Wednesday’s lineup changes also represented another opportunity for younger contributors to take on expanded roles as the Reds search for offensive momentum entering the middle portion of May.
For now, Francona’s focus remains straightforward as the Reds continue trying to find the combination that gives them the best chance to start winning consistently again.
