Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet destroyed by Twins in his worst MLB start ever

The Boston Red Sox, prior to the start of the 2025 season, paid top dollar on the trade market to bring Garrett Crochet in, giving them a legitimate ace to front their starting rotation. Suffice to say, no Red Sox fan would say that they feel as though the team overpaid to get one of the best and most consistent starting pitchers in the game.

However, even the best of the best have their off-days. Monday was one of them for Crochet. The Red Sox lefty, who entered the night with an ERA of 3.12 through three starts (17.1 innings pitched), endured the worst start of his MLB career to this date, as he struggled immensely against the Minnesota Twins in a 13-6 defeat.

Crochet could only get five outs before the Twins chased him out of the game; in the 1.2 innings he pitched, he allowed 11 total runs (10 earned) on nine hits, and he failed to strike out anybody while walking three batters. This was just a nightmare start through and through; as per StatMuse, this was the first time in his career where the Red Sox lefty allowed eight or more earned runs.

Bad starts happen in a long MLB season. What matters for Crochet now is not allowing the rot that seeped into his start on Monday fester through the rest of the season.

Crochet is uber-talented and has been incredible ever since becoming a full-time starter in 2024. There’s no reason to expect that this isn’t anything other than a one-off.

But to put further Crochet’s poor Monday start in perspective, his stinker against the Twins raised his ERA from 3.12 all the way to 7.58. The good news is that this is only one game and a professional of his caliber can easily put this in the rearview mirror. He’ll have four days to get it right before he goes back to the mound once more.
