Red Sox without Roman Anthony for highly-anticipated Cam Schlittler rematch

The Boston Red Sox’s worst-case scenario amid their struggles played out this week, with their rival, the New York Yankees, taking the first two games of the series. It hasn’t been a great year for Boston, but getting swept at Fenway Park would be a tough fate to come back from on Thursday night. Thanks to Roman Anthony’s injury, the Red Sox will be playing shorthanded, according to Mac Cerullo via X, formerly Twitter.

“Alex Cora says Roman Anthony’s back is still sore and that he’ll be day to day,” Cerullo reported. “Said a couple of times that he’ll be available tonight, but with an inflection that suggested he probably won’t play.”

Boston’s reluctance to give the full story on Anthony’s back issue is a bit concerning for Red Sox fans. Back injuries can be a tricky issue for athletes, especially baseball players. Anthony getting a recurring back injury at just 21 could put the future star on a bad path.

One thing the MLB world was looking forward to this week at Fenway was the matchup between Cam Schlittler and the Red Sox. While it still has some juice, given he is a Bostonian, an intriguing battle would’ve been the future of the Yankees’ rotation vs. the future of the Red Sox lineup.

If the Red Sox can climb out of the hole they’ve dug themselves over the next few seasons, these teams will one day be battling for a division crown again. When that comes, we will see plenty more Schlittler-Anthony showdowns. Unfortunately, this year’s version will have to wait for another series.
