Rams’ Chris Shula talks Myles Garrett usage with Michael Jordan, LeBron James comparison

The Los Angeles Rams have been praised for their trade of Myles Garrett. It took just Jared Verse, one first-round pick, one second-round pick, and one third-round pick, all of which are in different drafts, to acquire the edge rusher who is fresh off breaking the single-season sack record.

There is no doubting that Garrett is the best defensive player in football, if not the best player in the NFL overall. The Rams were Super Bowl favorites even before trading for Garrett, so fans expect this to work out as yet another Les Snead blockbuster masterclass.

There is one concern when it comes to the Garrett trade, though, and that is that the Rams’ base defense is a 3-4. Garrett, meanwhile, has predominantly operated in 4-3 schemes. While 3-4 outside linebackers and 4-3 defensive ends are typical interchangeable, and that transition should be an easy one for someone as talented as Garrett, it is still something worth monitoring for Rams fans and something that Los Angeles’ coaching staff will have to navigate. Defensive Coordinator Chris Shula isn’t worried about the transition for Garrett, though.

“We’re still going to have our principles, whether it’s stuff, but we’re going to let him do what he does best and we all know exactly what he does best,” Shula was quoted as saying in an Adam Grosbard tweet. “So, you know, you’re not going to take Michael Jordan or LeBron [James], you know, all those guys and pull them out of their comfort zone. We’re going to work with him and put him in the best spots that we think for him and the defense to succeed.”

A comparison to the consensus two greatest basketball players ever is a lofty one from Shula for Garrett, but the edge rusher is uber talented at getting after the quarterback, and he should have no problem doing so regardless of whether the Rams are in 4-3, 3-4, nickel packages, or something else.
