Raiders’ Kirk Cousins isn’t bothered by Klint Kubiak refusing to name starting QB

Fernando Mendoza concluded his first NFL preseason with another uneven outing and once again did not log a snap with the first-string offensive linemen. All signs point to Kirk Cousins winning the starting quarterback job. Even so, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak is still not ready to make his decision.

If the squad has competitive aspirations, it makes sense to begin the campaign with an experienced and accomplished signal-caller like Cousins. Though, if the goal is strictly development in Kubiak’s first year at the helm, then it could be better to throw Mendoza into the fire and let him emerge as a more battle-tested and smarter NFL QB. Many fans expect the outcome to wind up somewhere in the middle: start with the veteran and shift to the rookie midway through the season.

Kubiak is taking his time to publicly unveil his plan, but Cousins is not rattled.

“It’s up to coach,” the four-time Pro Bowler said, per ESPN’s Ryan McFadden, after completing 8-of-11 passes for 51 yards in the Raiders’ 18-12 preseason loss versus the San Francisco 49ers. “You do the best you can with the opportunities that you are given. …Naming something one day could change the next day. You just go about your business each day, methodically, and let the chips fall where they may.”

Kirk Cousins nearly threw an interception to Jack Jones on his first pass of the game, so it is not like he has left zero doubt about his abilities. Nevertheless, the 38-year-old has the track record and instincts to help Las Vegas clinch a victory in its season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

A 1-0 start is not something a new head coach nor floundering franchise usually take for granted.
