Poland assistant manager dies, aged 49, as Matty Cash pays tribute

Former Legia Warsaw manager Jacek Magiera has died aged 49, the Polish Football Association have confirmed.

Magiera had been the national team’s assistant manager since July 2025.

According to local reports, Magiera collapsed whilst out on a morning run.

He was rushed to the Military Clinical Hospital in Wroclaw but sadly passed away.

Polish FA statement

In a statement, the Polish FA confirmed the tragic news of Magiera’s passing.

They said: “The Polish Football Association has received with deep sadness and immense regret the news of the death of Jacek Magiera, the assistant coach of the Polish national team.

“The PZPN extends its most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Jacek Magiera.

“At the same time, we ask that the privacy and peace of his loved ones be respected during this very difficult time.”

Polish FA president Cezary Kulesza added: “With great sadness and disbelief, I received the news of Jacek Magiera’s death.

“It is difficult to find the right words in the face of such a sudden and completely unexpected loss.

“Jacek was an exceptional footballer, an excellent coach, but above all, a very good man on whom one could always rely.

“I wish to extend my condolences to the family and loved ones.

“At the same time, I appeal to the media and all commentators to respect the privacy of the family immersed in mourning.”

Tributes have since flooded in for Magiera, who had been Jan Urban’s assistant manager with the Polish national team for nine months.

The pair worked together during the qualifying campaign for this summer’s World Cup.

Poland missed out on a place in the finals after losing to Sweden in a play-off final last month.

Matty Cash pays tribute

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash made six appearances for the national team during Magiera’s time working with the set-up.

Writing on social media, Cash said: “Jacek. You were such an amazing guy always with a smile. You will be missed dearly. RIP legend.”

Magiera had previously taken charge of Poland’s youth sides at both under-19 and under-20 level.

Meanwhile, he won a league title during his time as Legia boss before two spells with Slask Wroclaw.

As a player, the midfielder won three further trophies with Legia, including two Ekstraklasa titles.

Magiera also played for Rakow Czestochowa, Widzew Lodz and Cracovia.
