Philly fans boo Willson Contreras out of 2026 Home Run Derby

The 2026 MLB Home Run Derby is sending everyone in Philly into pandemonium, especially with Philadelphia Phillies stars Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper taking part in the event at Citizens Bank Park. Phillies fans also tried to do everything they could to help Schwarber win in his semis matchup against Boston Red Sox star Willson Contreras.

“Wilson Contreras got booed when he did anything – take a pitch, hit a HR, step out – but when he recorded an out, then the Philly crowd cheered louder than a mid-week victory, wrote Kyle Fisher of MetroPhilly via social media post on X, formerly Twitter. “Contreras loved it – absolute cinema to close the semi-finals.”

The Red Sox catcher passed the test in the opening round of the Home Run Derby by hitting a total of 13 home runs — tied for the most in that round with St. Louis Cardinals slugger Jordan Walker. But Contreras’ run ended in the second round during his matchup versus his former Chicago Cubs teammate, Schwarber, losing a close one to the Phillies star.

Contreras had eight home runs in the head-to-head, nine by Schwarber. That effectively eliminated Contreras from Derby title contention, as Schwarber moved on to the final round, where he duked it out against Walker, who defeated Tampa Bay Rays star Junior Caminero in the semis, 6-5.

Despite falling short in the event, Contreras is undeniably having a great individual campaign with the Red Sox. In the first half of the season, the 34-year-old Venezuelan hit .285/.379/.542 with 20 home runs — on pace to break his career-high of 24 homers.
