Yankees’ Aaron Boone is still backing George Lombard Jr. despite string of errors

When a wise philosopher once said “the more things change, the more they stay the same”, little did he know that that statement would also apply to baseball someday. In particular, the New York Yankees fanbase must be getting some flashbacks to some unpleasant Anthony Volpe memories when watching prized rookie George Lombard Jr. play shortstop.

Lombard has been regarded as a great defensive prospect at shortstop. But he’s been going through some sort of yips from the field as of late. The Yankees shortstop committed his seventh error of the campaign on Thursday in what was just his 20th big-league game; it was in the eighth inning when he failed to field a ground ball from Yainer Diaz cleanly, which led to the Astros’ fifth run of the night in a 5-1 loss for New York.

Nonetheless, Lombard is 21, and the Yankees see him as an integral part of their future. Manager Aaron Boone remained confident that this slump is not something he won’t be able to overcome.

“He’ll get through this and put it in the rearview mirror,” Boone said, per Gary Phillips of New York Daily News.

Lombard’s error streak reached six games with this latest miscue, and at some point, this might be sapping the Yankees shortstop’s confidence. So much of baseball as a sport is mental, and one thing that could be worrying is if Lombard’s shoulders drop due to this slump.

This is reminiscent of Volpe’s error-spree last year, when he recorded 19 errors on the season and had the entire Yankees fanbase fuming. But Lombard, being as young as he is, is still in the good graces of the fans. He’s so young and he’s so early into his MLB career that some leeway is in order for him as he figures out how to become consistent on a daily basis in the big leagues.
