Steelers’ Drew Allar gives honest evaluation of performance in preseason finale vs. Bills

Drew Allar had some thoughts to share following his performance in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

Allar is preparing for the rookie campaign of his NFL career with the Steelers. Having had a solid four-year collegiate career at Penn State, the young quarterback looks to make an impression on the Pittsburgh as a potential long-term option after Aaron Rodgers retires following the 2026 season.

Allar mainly split time with Will Howard throughout the course of preseason action. It was the same for the finale against Buffalo, seeing the quarterbacks alternate between halves. Allar ended his night with nine out of 18 completions for 88 yards, reflecting on his display after the game.

“I feel like I played well; I know there’s plays that come to mind that I want to have back… Overall I felt pretty good about my performance,” Allar said, per reporter Chris Adamski.

How Drew Allar, Steelers played against Bills

Drew Allar and the Steelers put up a fight against the Bills. Despite their efforts, they came up short in a 28-27 loss to conclude preseason action with a 1-2 record.

Pittsburgh got off to a strong start with two touchdowns in the first quarter, leading 14-3 thanks to Will Howard’s highlights. However, Buffalo fought back as the hosts went on to outscore the Steelers 25-13 for the remainder of the contest.

Eli Heidenreich totaled up to nine carries for 35 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Meanwhile, Germie Bernard and Lake McRee were the touchdown scorers from the receiving corps.

The Steelers will attempt to improve on their 10–7 record of the past three seasons. They also attempt to end their seven-game playoff game losing streak dating back to the 2016 season. This season will begin with only the team’s fourth head coach in 58 seasons as McCarthy leads the team for 2026 and beyond, replacing Mike Tomlin in the process.

Pittsburgh’s campaign will begin at home against the Atlanta Falcons. That game commences on Sept. 13 with kickoff taking place at 1 p.m. ET.
