Bears’ Caleb Williams keeps it real with advice for Cam Ward
Caleb Williams went through a lot of adversity in his first season in the league. Williams, the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, came into a dysfunctional time for the Chicago Bears. His coaching staff did not do him any favors in developing him as a player, with both the head coach and the offensive coordinator getting fired in the middle of the season. However, after a change of scenery in the following offseason, Williams is playing the best ball of his young NFL career.
Now, we’re seeing a similar trajectory with the next first overall pick: Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward. Similar to the Bears’ situation a few years back, Ward went through a dysfunctional rookie season that saw his coaching staff get overhauled in the middle of the year. Now, fans are hoping that the young quarterback can follow a similar progression curve as Williams’.
For his part, Williams gave his fellow young quarterback some advice coming into the latter’s sophomore season. The Bears quarterback emphasized trusting the process, noting new Titans offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s history as a good coach.
“I think he (Ward) has an awesome coordinator that’s been in the league for a while,” Williams said, per Turron Davenport, referring to Daboll. “I don’t know how long he’s been in the league, and he’s been an awesome offensive coordinator. And he’s been in different places with different quarterbacks, so he has a good track record with quarterbacks. So, just believing and trusting in him and what he’s coaching you and teaching you, and then I think just being able to go out there and execute. I think we have some similarities in our game and things like that, and being able to make big plays and things like that, and just being able to keep consistent in making the small plays.”
This season, the expectations for Williams and the Bears is much higher than previous seasons. After making it all the way to the NFC Divisional Round and giving the Los Angeles Rams a run for their money, many are looking for the Bears to take that next step and be a title contender. As for the Titans, well, they’re just hoping to see progress from Ward as he enters Year 2 in the NFL as a starter.
