Phillies star Kyle Schwarber’s hilarious response to 2027 Derby at Wrigley Field

Heading into the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber was the favorite to win the competition. After all, the All-Star festivities this year were held at Citizens Bank Park, Schwarber’s home ballpark, and him having homefield advantage would play a part in a derby victory, which would be the first of his career. Alas, Jordan Walker happened.

Walker, the breakout star for the St. Louis Cardinals, managed to hit four home runs with one swing left, coming back from three home runs down to upset Schwarber and the rest of the Phillies faithful. It was a well-deserved moment for Walker, who’s turned a corner this year, but that leaves Schwarber still in pursuit of his first Home Run Derby after having participated in 2018, 2022, and 2026.

With the All-Star festivities in 2027 being in Schwarber’s old stomping grounds of Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs, reporters were keen on finding out the Phillies slugger’s interest level in joining the competition once more. But for Schwarber, all he had on his mind is getting a breather and some liquid refreshments.

“I’m just thinking about making it home tonight and having a beer,” Schwarber said when asked of his intentions to compete in the 2027 Home Run Derby, via Deesha Thosar of FOX Sports.

Indeed, it takes a lot of energy to hit balls out of the park even in a controlled environment such as the derby. There is also the emotional toll of watching your opponent hit one home run after another just as he needed to, which undoubtedly must have added to the Phillies slugger’s fatigue level.

Be that as it may, it does make sense for Schwarber to perhaps try in the derby one more time. He’s beloved in Chicago after helping the Cubs franchise break their 108-year World Series drought, and it would be a bit poetic if he does get over the derby hump in the place where he began his MLB career.
