Phillies’ Brandon Marsh gets real about turnaround after Rob Thomson firing
The Philadelphia Phillies continued their resurgence Wednesday night with a 6-3 comeback win over the Athletics, improving to 17-20 on the season and 8-1 under interim manager Don Mattingly following the dismissal of Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start.
Brandon Marsh was crucial in the win, finishing with three hits, including a triple and an RBI single. The 28-year-old outfielder improved his batting average to .336, the fourth-highest in Major League Baseball. Marsh also continued his strong start to May, going 6-for-12 through the first two games of the Athletics series for a .500 average during the month.
After the game, Marsh addressed Philadelphia’s turnaround under Mattingly.
“This team is too good to do what we were doing for that long,” Marsh said, adding that it was only a matter of time before the roster began producing consistently.

The Phillies entered the game 0-10 against left-handed starting pitchers this season before finally defeating Athletics left-hander Jeffrey Springs. Marsh contributed heavily to that effort, with all three of his hits coming against left-handed pitching.
Philadelphia has increasingly trusted Marsh in those matchups. He is on pace for approximately 125 at-bats against lefties this season, which would be about 50 more than he received in 2025. Marsh has responded by batting .280 against southpaws, going 7-for-25 in those situations.
The Phillies erased a 3-2 deficit with a four-run eighth inning against Jack Perkins. Kyle Schwarber opened the inning with a walk before a throwing error by Jeff McNeil and a single from Adolis Garcia loaded the bases. Edmundo Sosa gave Philadelphia the win with a go-ahead two-run single. Marsh followed with an RBI single, while Justin Crawford added an RBI groundout.
Garcia also homered earlier in the game, while Zack Wheeler turned in another quality outing in his first home start since returning from thoracic outlet decompression surgery. Wheeler allowed three runs on five hits across 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
The Phillies will attempt to complete a series sweep Thursday night behind Andrew Painter against Athletics right-hander JT Ginn.
