Phillies’ Alec Bohm finally riding pine, Eduardo Sosa gets nod after GW hit

The Philadelphia Phillies have an Alec Bohm problem, as he has been one of the worst hitters in baseball this season. It’s hard for a team to give up on someone who is a former All-Star and has given them six good seasons. Still, they are going to sit him on the bench in favor of Edmundo Sosa on Thursday evening, according to Phillies reporter Matt Gelb via X, formerly Twitter.

“A night after pinch-hitting for Alec Bohm in a close game, Phillies are sitting him. Edmundo Sosa is at third. Bohm’s .443 OPS ranks 177th among 178 qualified batters,” Gelb reported.

Sosa forced Don Mattingly’s hand thanks to his clutch hitting on Wednesday night for Philadelphia. With the team down 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth against the Athletics, Sosa knocked a go-ahead single into center field with the bases loaded, leading the Phillies to another victory to extend their record over the last 10 to 8-2.

“Interim manager Don Mattingly called it a ‘reset day’ for Bohm. Encouraged him to not swing a bat this afternoon. Mattingly reaffirmed the organization’s faith in Bohm,” Gelb continued.

The Phillies are still in an uphill battle to make the postseason, but their recent stretch has them in third in the National League East and just three games under .500. The Atlanta Braves are running away with the division early in the season, but Philadelphia is a part of a group of teams that are nowhere near out of the playoff race in the National League wild card.
