Penn State QB Rocco Becht explains why Matt Campbell’s culture is an improvement over James Franklin
Penn State football continues adjusting to a new era under head coach Matt Campbell, and quarterback Rocco Becht recently offered insight into the cultural shift taking place inside the program.
The Nittany Lions hired Campbell in December after moving on from James Franklin, signaling a major reset across the program. Since then, Campbell has emphasized accountability, leadership, and player involvement as foundational parts of his approach.
Becht, who transferred from Iowa State in January, already understands Campbell’s philosophy after previously playing under him. Consequently, his arrival has added both experience and familiarity to Penn State’s quarterback room during an important transition period.
Throughout spring practice, the Nittany Lions quarterback consistently emphasized alignment and accountability as defining changes within the program. Early reactions inside the locker room suggest Campbell’s leadership style has quickly connected with both returning veterans and incoming transfers. Becht’s comments also reflected how fully the team has embraced Campbell’s player-driven structure entering the 2026 season.
On3Sports’ Nick Kosko shared Becht’s comments in a recent article discussing the evolving culture of Penn State football.
“He wants to build a player-led program,” Becht said. “When you’re not all aligned with the same goals and expectations, you’re not going to win those big games. … Last year, it wasn’t really player-led and the culture just wasn’t always there. Right now, where we are, everyone is completely bought in.”
The remarks from the redshirt senior reflect a noticeable contrast between the current environment and the previous structure under Franklin. Under Campbell, players appear to hold greater responsibility for leadership, communication, and accountability throughout the roster.
The comments reinforce why Penn State targeted Becht during the transfer portal cycle. Beyond adding quarterback depth, the Nittany Lions brought in a player already familiar with Campbell’s expectations, leadership style, and overall culture.
As the season approaches, Penn State appears focused on building stronger internal alignment while positioning itself to compete at a higher level in the Big Ten.
