Patriots rumors: Albert Breer sounds off on potential Stefon Diggs reunion amid A.J. Brown trade buzz

While Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown has been linked to the New England Patriots for a long time, with many thinking next week could be the time a move is made, there is another name some are speculating could join the star. As rumors surrounding the Patriots and Brown will continue, this NFL insider answers whether there will be a reunion between the team and Stefon Diggs.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated would answer a question regarding the possibility of Diggs returning to New England with Brown to form a wide receiver duo. Breer would say it’s “unlikely” that happens, as he expects Brown to be on the Patriots next week, but not with Diggs, but not because of personal feelings.

“I’d say it’s unlikely that both A.J. Brown and Stefon Diggs will be aboard, and it’s very likely that Brown will be a Patriot this time next week, making it less likely that Diggs will be one again any time soon,” Breer wrote.

Overall fit of A.J. Brown and Stefon Diggs with the Patriots is questionable

Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the Patriots in March of 2025, leading to a productive season of recording 1,013 yards on 85 catches with four touchdowns. After New England cut Diggs on March 11 as part of a cost-saving move, some could see him returning on a cheaper deal, though Breer speaks on how the “overall fit” would be an issue with the injury history on him and Brown.

“Both are accustomed to being the focal point of an offense,” Breer wrote. “So if you become reliant on Diggs and Brown, and one or both go down, that’s not great. And there’s only one ball to go around. So, again, this is simply a fit thing. If injuries were to change the Patriots’ situation and Diggs were still available, I’d bet the door would stay open. But I don’t think it’s in the plans now.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen if or when the Patriots obtain Brown in the next week, as Breer implies, and if Diggs is in the plans.
