Patrick Ewing gives Redeem Team just one game in series vs. Dream Team
Close to 35 years have passed, and the Dream Team remains widely considered the greatest assembled squad of all time. Sorry, The Avengers and One Direction.
Part of that legendary team was Patrick Ewing. He was starring for the New York Knicks when he got the call to play for the Dream Team, along with Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley, among others.
Ewing helped the Dream Team, coached by the late Chuck Daly, dominate the 1992 Barcelona Olympics en route to the gold medal. Their performance was a monumental touchpoint in international basketball.
In 2008, the Redeem Team was also a global force. Led by LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony, the powerhouse squad reclaimed the gold medal for the United States in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Since then, there have been debates about who is better between the Dream Team and the Redeem Team.
For Ewing, in a best-of-seven series, the answer is clear.
“They’re (Redeem Team) going to win one. They might win one. They’re talented. They’re a great team. But we were the best team ever. Ever,” said Ewing on “The Pivot Podcast.”
“People don’t want to admit that. Even those guys don’t want to admit that, but we were the best team ever.”
The Dream Team steamrolled past the competition, with Daly infamously not even calling a single timeout in the entire tournament.
The Redeem Team, meanwhile, had to fend off Spain in the final. It, however, can be argued that international basketball had developed well by that time, leading to stiffer competition.
Ewing and 10 other players of the Dream Team, which was also inducted as a group, are in the Hall of Fame. The Redeem Team has sent six players to Springfield, with James and Chris Paul joining them soon.
