Patrick Beverley claims some NBA superstars couldn’t hack it in Europe, but he won’t name names

Patrick Beverley has had a truly unique basketball career that spanned from the NBA to European basketball. Two years after his last NBA game, Beverley is set to play for Boulazac in the French league.

In his conversation on Thanasis Antetokounmpo’s Thanalysis Show, the 2009 NBA draft pick made a bold comment. According to him, current NBA players could not compete in Europe.

“There are currently NBA superstars who couldn’t play in Europe,” he said. “I really mean that. They simply couldn’t. Because the adaptation is completely different. Everything goes through the team. The coach controls everything. It’s almost like a college team made up of adults. The team comes before every individual.”

Though he did not name any current players in the league, Beverley outlined mentality as the contributing factor between the players on both sides. He said that basketball in Europe is like the college basketball setup, where the coach controls most of what happens on the team.

“They have no idea, and I don’t mean no disrespect towards their physical abilities and what they can do on the court, I’m talking about mentality.”

The former Milwaukee Bucks guard also mentioned that the team comes first rather than the self, something he sees as difficult for NBA players to accept, given the spotlight.

“Sometimes you even share your hotel room with a teammate, travels are not organized completely comfortable like in the NBA, even though that aspect has definitely improved a lot,” he further said.

“At the game coach can decide that we don’t shoot until there is less than 6 seconds on the clock, everything is based on defense, it’s completely different.”

Now with the Boulazac Basket Dordogne, Patrick Beverley is enjoying his time in Europe. The former NBA guard played for 12 seasons in the league before finally moving overseas.
