Serena Williams’ candid response on possible tennis return

Serena Williams is going with the flow when it comes to a potential tennis comeback.

At the 2026 U.S. Open, Williams played two doubles matches. Her first was a mixed doubles match with Carlos Alcaraz, and the last was the women’s doubles tournament with her sister, Venus Williams. Ahead of her doubles match with her sister, Serena spoke to People about how she feels about a potential return to the sport.

“I really don’t have an agenda right now. I’m taking it one match at a time and seeing where my body can take me,” she explains. “It’s been exciting to see what I’m capable of and to feel myself getting stronger. Right now, I’m just enjoying being back out there and seeing where it goes.”

It was the first time that Serena and Alcaraz were doubles partners, but they were able to win their first-round match of the tournament against Lloyd Glasspool and Erin Routliffe. However, in the quarterfinals they were defeated by Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.

Serena and Venus only made it to the first-round match of the women’s doubles tournament following their loss by Maya Joint and Chan Hao-ching. The tennis icons have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together and Serena shared that she was just excited to share the court with her sister again,

“We’ve experienced so much together, on and off the court, and I think at this stage we’re able to appreciate these moments in a different way,” she says. “We’re competitive, of course, but we’re also having a lot of fun and really enjoying getting to do this together again.”

There’s not a clear answer on whether Serena will be back on the court but she explained that she has several aspects of her post-tennis journey on her plate.

“I’m balancing a lot right now — training, competing, my businesses, and most importantly, being a mom,” Serena who has two daughters Olympia, 8 and Adira, 3, with husband Alexis Ohanian. “I think I appreciate it differently now. I’m having more fun and really enjoying the whole process — not just competing, but being back on tour with my team and having my family there with me.”

“I’m at a different place in my life now, and I think that’s allowed me to enjoy it in a completely new way,” she added.

Serena originally stepped away from tennis after the US Open in September 2022 but instead of sharing a “retirement” from the sport where she earned 39 Grand Slams tiles, she stated she was “evolving away from tennis” to grow her family and expand her various business ventures.
